'Rang Barse'
From the movie 'Silsila'
This percussion-heavy song from 1981's 'Silsila' is sung by one of India's most enduring and celebrated film actors, Amitabh Bachchan, starring as a man who marries his dead brother's widow in order to care for her child. Bachchan became a star through a series of "angry young man" portrayals in the '70s (shades of Al Pacino?) and continues to do award-nominated work today.

This song from the 1981 blockbuster adaptation of the classic 'Romeo and Juliet' storyline was sung by S.P. Balasurbramanyam and Lata Mangeshkar. The latter is one of the most popular "playback singers" in Bollywood, with her pre-recorded singing used on over 1,000 top Bollywood songs to replace of the voice of actresses.

This mid-tempo horn-and-strings led song was performed in 1988 by Udit Narayanan, one of the leading male playback singers in all of India. He is estimated to have sung in over 260 Bollywood movies, and in 2009 was awarded the distinguished Padma Shri award by the Indian Government in recognition for his contributions to Indian culture.

The 1992 film featuring this song by Udit Narayanan and Sadhana Sargam centers around the prestigious annual bicycle race in a college town. A young man from the poor side of the tracks competes with richer students to win both the race, and, of course, the girl, portrayed by the lovely and talented Ayesha Jhulka.

This top Bollywood song was re-visited both in Rahman's 2002 stage musical 'Bombay Dreams' and Spike Lee's 2006 heist movie 'Inside Man.'
